Community Resources For Uninsured
Wednesday March 4, Symons Elementary School 6:30pm
Herbert C. Smitherman Jr., M.D., M.P.H.
Dr. Herbert Smitherman will speak on how a community, city, county, state or nation can pool and share resources to effectively care for the uninsured. He recently co-authored the book Taking Care of the Uninsured: A Path to Reform which provides hard evidence of how to bring a sustainable health care model to the uninsured. This approach is likely to be important in the upcoming debate on health care and US Rep. John Conyers of Detroit recently submitted Dr. Smitherman's name to the White House as a candidate for as yet unfilled post of Surgeon General of the United States.
Dr. Smitherman is Assistant Dean of Community and Urban Health at Wayne State University and Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine at the Karmanos Cancer Institute. He has spent years studying the issues behind caring for the under and uninsured.
